MacArthur Towers Senior Housing is an example of how landscape architecture can enhance the quality of life for urban seniors, even in an affordable housing project. Courtland Studio, LLC transformed the building’s outdoor footprint into a multi-functional wellness garden that prioritizes accessibility, safety, and psychological well-being, as well as providing opportunities for exercise.

Accessible Connectivity: The Serpentine Path

Recognizing the unique needs of a senior population, the site plan centers on universal design.

• Integrated ADA-Compliant Navigation: A signature serpentine concrete ramp with architectural handrails allows residents to navigate the property’s elevation changes effortlessly without appearing to be an afterthought.
• Safety & Ambience: Integrated bollard lighting provides subtle, low-glare illumination for evening strolls, ensuring safety without compromising the tranquil atmosphere.

Recreational Wellness: The Putting Green & Plaza

The outdoor common areas are designed to encourage active aging and social engagement.

• The Putting Green: A custom-contoured synthetic turf putting green is sheltered by a striking modern timber pergola, offering a shaded recreational zone for residents.
• Social Plazas: Multiple circular concrete terraces feature outdoor furniture and comfortable park benches, creating outdoor rooms for community interaction.

Lush Mediterranean Planting

The botanical palette was selected to provide year-round visual interest and cooling shade in the Los Angeles climate.

• Vertical Texture: Dramatic specimen Date Palms anchor the site, providing a resort-style verticality that complements the building’s architecture.
• Seasonal Bloom: A vibrant mix of flowering trees and drought-tolerant shrubs adds pops of color and texture against the lush green planting.
