The Hazen estate has a refined blend of “Storybook Traditional” charm with high-end modern updates. Courtland Studio LLC collaborated closely with the homeowners to reimagine this Los Angeles estate, creating a warm, elevated, and personalized outdoor living environment that maximizes hillside topography.

Authentic Northern European Wellness: The Estonian Sauna

A primary focal point of the redesign was the integration of an authentic Northern European-style sauna, custom-manufactured in Estonia by Auroom Wellness.

• The Design: Renowned for traditional Nordic craftsmanship, this minimalist structure brings a serene, high-quality wellness to the heart of Los Angeles.
• Integration: We nestled the sauna into the landscape to provide a private sanctuary that balances old-world tradition with contemporary luxury.

Pool & Spa Renovation

• Finishes: Homeowner utilized stone-like pool finishes and vibrant Spanish-style porcelain tiles to add depth and Mediterranean flair.
• Detailing: Decorative tilework accents the waterline, elevating the aquatic space into a centerpiece of functional art.

Innovative Hillside Engineering & Terraced Decking

Navigating the steep terrain of Los Angeles required hillside landscape design and structural coordination.

• Multi-Level Living: We developed a series of outdoor terraces featuring multi-level wooden decks.
• Connectivity: Custom-crafted stairs and pathways allow for seamless navigation of the sloped terrain, maintaining an organic, harmonious aesthetic that feels connected to the natural hillside.

Atmospheric Landscape Lighting & Planting

Lighting and horticulture were used to soften the structural elements and create a year-round “resort” feel.

• Professional Lighting: Subtle, warm-toned landscape lighting highlights wooden steps, pathways, and mature specimen trees, creating a dramatic nighttime ambiance while also ensuring safety.
• Lush Planting: The palette features a resilient mix of succulents, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs, enriching the environment with texture, softness, and seasonal color while still part of low water landscape design.
